Is it normal that i have pulled out 6 of my toenails?

Ive always been a skin picker, even when i was young... but recently its taken a very severe turn.

Ive actually managed to completely remove 6 of my toenails, literally the root and all, theres not even any under the skin that could grow back, theyre completely gone, all i have on those toes are exposed nail beds.

I dont know why i do it, i just feel like i have to, ive been told to keep socks on to try and combat it but all i want to do when i wear socks is pull them off and start pulling at my nails or pulling my skin off the soles of my feet. Recently, ive started using tools because it does a much better job. Ill use some clippers off my swiss army knife to cut parts of my skin off the bottom of my foot, sometimes slice skin off with a knife and to pull my nails out, i have a pair of tweezers which i dig as far down as i can under my nails and begin pulling.

If this isn't a troll, you should tell a doctor.

Nah, this already counts as selfharm. It is calming and a normal reaction from getting rid of stress, just more extreme. You should wash it and cover it with a tissue or something.

You definetly need to see a doctor cause a nail protects you from infections and bacteria, you could loose your toes if you do not care about them...

He probably will advise you to see a therapist, so you can handle your inner stress. I also chew of my skin and fingernails off from my fingers ,my therapist said it is stress. But he didn't do anything about it since it is not self-harm.

    Good Luck~

    • They do occasionally form new ones under the nail bed but i find myself digging them out and pulling them out again.

I imagine that the nails would grow back, because I once lost a big toenail when I was in ballet, and used to dance en pointe. My toenail grew back so well that I don't remember which toenail I lost, the left, or right one.

Sounds like a combination of self mutilation, OCD. I imagine you are doing this as a means of self soothing, but it is a destructive means coping mechanism.

I think it's should seek out professional help.
