I think the top ones way off the mark but you do always have to stay cautious so early in tho none the less. He more just sounds like a bit of a softy more than anything , I think he wants "the one" just as much as you do . Much to contrary belief some of us guys do you know and you can easily fall in 2 mths - 2 days even but only time can tell if it's got what it takes long term , it's the same for any new relationship.
The other one , dunno , why didn't they get together before ?
I mean you can click with someone but know inside it's not actually in relationship terms , I've had that with girls and some I'm sure from the outside it'd look like we were meant for each other but I wouldn't want to be with them or be attracted sexually . That's happened a few times.
You should ask him , dig into it a bit , why didn't you ever get with her anyway , you seem to get along so well ? If there's a friend you can trust that knows him , ask him too - I'd just dig into it a bit first up , see if you can get him talkin about it and what's making him tick on it!
