That's my experience. I have seen it suggested in more than one place that if you want to remember your dreams, keep a notebook and pen next to your bed and make a point of trying to remember your last dream as soon as you wake up and scribble down whatever fragments you can remember. There probably will be something. With practice, you'll (supposedly) get better at remembering.

Personally, I think dreams are just the brain jabbering away nonsensically to itself when it's able to freewheel, and they have no real significance. So I don't worry about trying to remember them.

I love the description in your last paragraph, but I usually find what I dream quite interesting, although usually confusing. What I really hate is when a fragment of a dream is there when I first wake up and then vanishes and I can't remember what it was.
