I think it's normal that you can't forget this. It's no wonder nightmares we have as kids effect us so deeply. The brain is still developing and our mind trying to make sense of things. Your nightmare sounds like a very powerful experience. It seems that the red balloons represent joyful, childlike exuberance and the black machine pure indestructible evil - a very disturbing juxtaposition.
I definitely feel that sharing and expressing these experiences are the way forward.
