Is it normal that i am a better person when i drink?

When I drink alcohol I am a much better person in general. I am more sociable and honest. I feel much more confident and content. Is this normal. When I drink, I feel much more capable when interacting with anyone. I feel happy and I spend more time with family.

    • I doubt being alcoholic is fun.

I'm pretty sure its linked to many deaths.

      • Being an alcoholic isn't bad as long as you can handle your shit and not be a sloppy belligerent moron.

        • As long as OP isn't drinking that it would lead to that then they should be OK and well.

          • Well yeah there are people that drink all the time and you can't tell, and people who just get dumb smashed early in the day to where they can't do anything useful at all. "Functional alcoholic" is a complete contradiction invented by the AA cult, since the defining point of alcoholism is drinking to the point where you cant function. AA and the rehab industry likes loose definitions of addiction because more people in treatment = more money/cult members.

            • AA is 100% a shitty cult. I hate it. My mum went to the one in the UK back when I was in school, and they told her all sorts of stupid shit about alcohol being a demon sitting on your shoulder, and how the only way to be "properly" sober was to accept Jesus into your heart and admit to him that you're a sinner. Absolutely nothing in there about self-control or personal growth.

Once she got her 6 month sober award she wanted to drop her sessions down to once a month because she felt that talking about alcohol at daily meetings was becoming counterproductive, and she wanted to try and move on with her life. Her sponsor kicked off like a nut case and wouldn't stop calling her, even into the night. In the end she had to report the sponsor to the police and change her phone number.

The whole thing was fucking weird. I'm all for support groups but AA specifically is a pile of shit and they should replace it with something better.

  • Everyone feels better drunk, it’s easier to live without caring what people think.

  • Same!

  • Is that your opinion, or did someone tell you that?

  • Yup alcohol has antidepressant properties but is too toxic to use in a medical setting.

    • Alcohol is actually a depressant, which is why it suppresses inhibitions

      • It has both qualities. The inhibition in our brains/behaviour is a result of a group of neurons firing which inhibits other neurons (they control our extroverted qualities, risk taking, impulsive behaviour). At doses lower than total depressive action (total comatose state), it inhibits the inhibiting neurons causing disinhibition. At very high levels(or toxic) alcohol inhibits nearly all electrical activity in brain(total depressant action).

        • Social inhibition at lower doses, sedative at higher doses. But with prolonged abuse it has an overall depressant effect. If the OP starts to use this as a crutch, it could mean they are experiencing some significant anxiety in social situations (I am not suggesting social anxiety disorder). For the sake of their body, I hope they get help if it ever starts to reach that point.
