Is it normal that i’ve had consistent violent nightmares nearly every night?

For about a year now I’ve had terrible nightmares every night. Last night it was about my father being killed, and most nights it’s about crashing a car into a lake and not being able to get out. Another one that’s really common is being kidnapped or killed slowly, it’s horrible, and wonder if anyone else has an issue like this.

Sounds like a symptom of a mental illness

There are many different causes for adults to get recurring nightmares. Causes can be anxiety, PTSD, depression, and some sleep disorders. Best thing to do is talk to a therapist if possible or at least some form of counseling.

I did have a therapist for half a year, but wasn’t able to pay them anymore. I’m considering just getting one session just to talk things out. Thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it.

Just try to look up affordable places near you. Sometimes colleges and universities will offer services like therapy to the public for free or lowered prices to give some of the senior students some experience so that may be something you want to look into. There are also some online alternatives that may help.

Also if you haven't already try to talk about the things you see in your nightmares with someone you trust like a family member or friend.

Thanks so much. And yes I’m a freshman in college, I can see if there’s anything like that here. I have tried talking to some family about them, but unfortunately they dismiss it as just ‘school stress’. Your advice is really appreciated, I’ll try to get into even a single cheap session, I think it’d help.

Could be premonitions. Or a demonic attachment. Or dementia.

this sounds like you might have post-traumatic stress disorder, or possibly just a lot of stress going on in your life for the last year. that sounds exhausting and I hope it gets betters soon.

Thank you, and yes I’ve not been diagnosed anything, but it’s been severe enough to know I have a mental disorder of some type. I have random panic attacks that don’t seem to be caused by anything in particular and had self harm issues for over 2 years (been clean for 1 year and 3 months now). I hope that since my life has calmed down a bit since then that it will stop at least some.

You're probably experiencing a lot of stress in the real world and it's manifesting itself in your dreams.

Sounds like you are under a lot of stress, and your subconscious is trying to work it out in your dreams.

That sounds terrible: what was going on in your life a year ago when the nightmares began?

I’ve been working 2 jobs and am in a sport where we practice 8 to 26 hours a week. Also college. Last year was definitely more hectic than this year, but it’s definitely still stressful
