I am a male and shave everything front and back. Never did this until about 15 years ago. The girl I was with suggested it and I originally said no way, that would look weird. I have the before and after pictures that she took. I look at the before pictures with all that hair, it is gross looking. I admit it did look strange at first but now I could never go back to having hair down there. Best thing is she loved it bare so much better. It makes me feel a lot cleaner especially the butt area. I feel the same way about women, I prefer no pubic hair down there.
Just my personal preference, I don't judge people either way. Whatever they feel comfortable with.
