It's "meant" to reflect the contribution each side puts to the marriage...ie if one partner earns most/all the money while the other partner contributes to the family by doing things that support the "breadwinner" in doing that (so more the traditional "domestic" roles...childcare, housework, etc etc) because they have (presumbly) had an agreement to split responsibility this way in their marriage at an earnings detriment, maybe even a professional detriment depending on the person, to the "domestic" partner. It seems out of proportion at a large scale but everything celebrity is out of proportion.
Marriage is meant to be two people working as one. Hence, less of divide between "yours/mine" during the period of marriage.
I'm not saying it's a perfect system - it's definitely not. I'm not even convinced it's a good system anymore, now that often both people in a marriage work. But I'm not a legal person and I'm sure there's a lot I haven't thought of.
Divorce settlements - there's no blanket answer. I'll always be pro child support (and too many people seem fucking clueless about what that actually entails...) but alimony... ehhh...

I suppose he will still have child support to pay so it will help him with that.
