Is it normal some vegans don't eat eggs?

I don't understand the vegans that think eating eggs is cruel, since the chickens aren't killed when they lay eggs but if their worried about eggs that came from caged hens in the grocery store why not buy eggs from farmers markets? Or better yet own their own hens. I have 3 myself and collect their eggs, I don't have a rooster so I'm not eating eggs that could potentially hatch.

So any vegans out there who think eating eggs is bad could you tell me what your thoughts are on this?

ALL vegans don't eat eggs or animal products. That's what separates them from Vegetarians

There are various reasons, anti-cruelty or not. cost, cleanliness, convenience, etc. others just do not want to get their nutrients from any animal products and may or may not find it "cruel". some find simply owning animals to be cruel.

    • As long as you properly care for and give space for the animal, I don't see how that's cruel o.o

There's nothing stopping my chickens from leaving if they want to, they can still fly and I know they could clear my fence if they really wanted to :p

Didn't most of the masters properly care for their slaves? They weren't cruel to the slaves. Only some slaves were mistreated. How is that any different than you and your chickens? Oh and by the way, chickens can't really fly. They can make short hops. If you want to offer them real freedom, take down your fence.

        • Slaves and having a pet are completely different, for starters pets aren't stolen from their families, raped, beaten, or forced to do work out in the fields until they faint due to exhaustion. The people who do attempt to hurt a pet in anyway are prosecueted by the law and are sent to jail and are not allowed to have animals in their care again.

Slaves were used for doing dirty work and low jobs that no one else wanted to do, the difference between a slave and my chickens is that they aren't forced to work and are properly fed and aren't whipped/beaten LOL.

Dude chickens can fly, to me it sounds like you've never owned a chicken before. One of my oldest girls is actually able to fly up and perch on top of my fence because there's a park nearby and she likes to see what's going on.

Hell even my baby 2 month old chicken can fly from my table all the way on top of my bed.

They already have freedom, like I said they are able to jump my fence but it's never happened because their content running around my gigantic backyard.

But sure let me take the fence down so dogs, cats, and other predators can get a chance to rip out their intestines. It's freedom like you said, right? It's better for my chickens to get their neck snapped and eaten then safely being at their home?

Are you smoking dope or what? You don't think that dogs, cats, cows, horses, etc., aren't taken from their mothers and separated from their families just to become someone's pet or forced laborer?

People who abuse other people are prosecuted too, in this modern day.

Have you ever seen a jockey take to the whip on a race horse? How about pulling a plow or wagon? Do you think the horse really wants to do that? A greyhound or horse that doesn't win a race is put down. The same thing to a dog or cat who won't obey its owner. Do you think that the little goldfish wants to be stuck in that stupid bowl forever, only to be flushed down the toilet when it dies or the owner gets bored with it? I think the answer would be a big no.

Owning a pet is nothing more than forced slavery on that animal.

Chickens can't fly in the sense of a regular bird. A chicken can only make short hops. If another animal eats your slave chickens, it is just natural selection. The chickens should be able to escape the danger. They only get killed by predators when they are penned in and can't escape to trees or high areas. Or fly away as you think that they can.

            • I already know the cruelty of greyhound and horse racing, and I'm entirely against that and glad they are at least starting to ban greyhound racing where I live. I don't think that's common of someone putting down a cat/dog if it doesn't listen, as more likely the owner will abandon the pet on the streets or a shelter, as it costs money to put down an animal.

Keeping a goldfish in a tiny bowl is also animal abuse because they do grow large and you need at least a tank to keep a few in. I'm not really an expert on fish however because I've never cared for one, so I'll leave it at that.

I don't see how my chickens are slaves though because there is no chicken racing, they can't pull wagons, or anything like that lol. My chickens don't do work and I don't force them to do anything, I let them do whatever they want in my backyard and if they want to come inside the house for a visit I'll let them in.

You also gonna tell me my ringneck parrot is a slave even when I take him outside when he's not wing clipped? lol

I am a vegan. I actually stopped eating animal products because I was having weird symptoms and I thought going vegan would help. I was right, it helped! :)

I also have a problem with animal cruelty, but that is not the reason I stopped eating animal products.

If you want eggs, it's best to have your own bird to get the eggs from. That way you can make sure the bird is not being abused.

Vegans have various reasons for not eating, wearing, or buying any product with animal products or tested on animals. I don't think being a vegan is normal, and, by this, I mean most people aren't vegan. But I certainly don't think it's wrong or weird to be vegan. To each their own.

But I do have to agree with you, I think from reading this thread that your chickens seem well cared for. Did you know that there are plenty of people that only eat local? As in only eggs from their own chickens, milk from a local farmer's cow, pork from a neighbor's pig (raised and slaughtered humanely), etc. Another reason for this phenomenon is it is better for the environment. A lot of carbon emissions are produced from the transport of food globally. I tried eating local for 6 months for the environmental reason, and because I knew the local animals were treated better, but it's very expensive and I didn't have the will-power. I commend people who do this. I commend vegans for standing by their beliefs. And I commend you for standing by yours. Everybody has a right to their own opinion, and can act on it in any way they see fit.

Isn't eating an egg sort of like aborting a chicken?

    • Only if it's fertilized, chickens can still lay eggs without a rooster around. There's no harm in eating eggs that'll never be capable of hatching because there's no fetus inside
