Is it normal rap music makes no sense to me what so ever

Try as I might I don’t understand any element of rap or the rap scene in general.

My main gripe with the genre is that I honestly can’t tell when rapping good or bad. When people try to “spit some bars” at karaoke I can’t tell if I’m supposed to cheer or boo, it all just sounds awkward to me. If you want a movie example take Pitch Perfect when Anna Kendrick starts rapping in the sing-off in the empty swimming pool, I assumed she was meant to be embarrassing herself and slaughtering her team’s chance of winning but then the crowd errupted. Excuse me?

It makes no sense to me what’s ”cringey” in the rap scene, 8 Mile is the most famous rap film hinging on intense rap battles, yet paradoxically rap battles are seen as “cringey”? Writing a scathing diss track against your rap rival is cool until they make a rebuttal then suddenly you’re embroiled in a “rap feud” and you’re, once again, “cringe”.

The final baffling nail in rap’s coffin of nonsense is the abundance of facial tattoos, granted regretable ink choices can be seen across all genres but the likes of Lil Xan and 6ix9ine are unparalleled in their stupidity. I can’t tell if people actually take these boys seriously or just see them as real life car crash TV, a sort of musical Jerry Springer?

Am I alone in my confusion?

    • I listened to Dance With the Devil and it was actually one of the better raps I’ve heard. It was more like listening to a gritty and disturbing cautionary tale than a song. It also helps that I have a soft spot for early 2000s New York as a setting.

Born in Belfast was a strong unapologetically Irish start but halfway through descended into the generic “I like to fuck whores” trope that puts me off the genre.

      Thanks for the suggestions though.

No problem, I hate all those lil rappers too, jun tzu has some great lyrics in other songs like if you listen to his fire in the booth session or his song 'a cause worth living for' which is about his dad who was a member of a terrorist organization

    • Constant use of racist and sexist language is another reason I dislike rap.

The only reason I didn’t include it is that I see why some people would enjoy those lyrics, even if some of them are white boys from the suburbs thinking they’re eDgy.

I wanted to focus on the parts of the genre that just don’t compute for me in any context.

  • There are four major genres in music that i feel like others who aren't into it don't understand. Rap, metal, dubstep, and pop are those genres.

So yes, people think my favorite genre of music can be very cringe too. But hey, it's their taste.

    • You make a fair point. I suppose if heavy metal grew in popularity in the 2020s in the way rap has done in the 2010s there would be plenty of confused people. Especially if their equivalent of Anna Kendrick broke out some guttural growls in the next “Young People Singing Movie Franchise”.

I think what perplexes me the most is how rap became so mainstream, to the point where it’s almost assumed that as a millennial I like it.

What’s your favourite genre if you don’t mind me asking?

      • Thats strange. As a millenial, I've never heard the assumption that all millenials liked rap. And no one has made the assumption with me either. Then again. Maybe that's because of all the metal shirts I wear :P

Metal, all the way! Love it! How about yourself?

        • Maybe I should start doing the same, I’m mostly into general rock but stray into the metal sphere every now and then.

It’s not really an explicitly stated assumption but I see it in the targeted ads for rap concerts/albums that I’m assuming are only being directed towards me because of my age group and in the way people expect me to freak out with them when rap songs come on the radio/ in the club.
