Is it normal my mom got mad that i threw away her makeup?

My mom is not exactly a hoarder but does form unhealthy attachments to objects. Her expired makeup, all ranging from 10-20 years old were sitting in my room for 3 years and I was cleaning today and decided to throw them away.
Didn't take out the huge garbage bag full of crap in my room and instead left it in the hallway outside our apartment. Big mistake. She discovers all her old foul smelling cosmetics and goes sicko mode.
Mind you she has not used any of these in at least 5 years and had 3 years to take them into her room or put them anywhere else.
If I had actually thrown them all out she never would have noticed they were missing because she doesn't even wear makeup anymore. I'm an adult who pays rent so I think I should have a bit of say in what I have in my room.

You were right to throw them away 16
She was right to get angry 9
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

I’m assuming you’re in your late teens or early twenties? A lot of older people are telling you to move out not realising the financial constraints on young adults these days. Especially if like me you live in an insanely expensive city, living independently here for a 23 year-old is a pipe dream (you need a rich daddy or a sugar daddy).

On to your question, as she was dumping her tat in your room you were within your rights to bin it. I live with 5 relatives who, like your mum, hoard stuff and I have a 0 tolerance policy for them dumping crap in my room. I have an “It goes in my room, it goes in the bin” policy and I suggest you implement the same.

Do a complete clean out of all her stuff in your room and get a lock on your bedroom door to keep her out.

And keep the bin bag in your room this time!

You shouldn't toss other peoples stuff. You could've removed it from your room and put it in hers instead, and told her that it's all expired and could be a health hazard. Then it would've been up to her to still keep it or not.

I think it would be ideal for you to leave this unsanitary situation with a toxic person. It's not normal for parents to use their children's rooms as storage for there junk, and the fact that your paying rent and still having your mother's hoarding garbage in ade your personal space makes things even worse. I hope you can get out of this awful situation soon!

It's wrong to throw away stuff which belongs to someone else, but of course you don't have to store it in your room if you don't want to.

A more adult solution would've been to have put it in her room.

There's no point in appealing to reason with a hoarder, it's a mental condition.

Its her house, her decision to keep whatever she wants, be grateful she gave you shelter, you have no idea about the sufferings of the homeless in the cold street sleeping with stray dogs, drinking water from the drains to survive. If anything you owe her an apology for throwing out her make ups.

You could offer to buy her new makeup that isn't a health hazzard.

    • If I bought her more makeup they would all go to waste anyways because she doesn't wear makeup. Plus that makeup she had was probably given to her by sugar daddies or paid for with whore money that could have gone to her children.

Just an attempt at compromise. If you want to be angry, nothing we say will remedy that.

    • Because that way she has to internally acknowledge it's not good to keep it that long?

Exactly. No one needs that much crap laying around either. Getting rid of stuff, purging is good.
