Is it normal my fiancé can daydream for hours at a time

My fiancé can spend hours just staring at nothing and doing nothing. Sometimes he just sits on the edge of the bed and looks at the floor, or stands and looks out the window, or lays in the hammock. But he can be still, just staring, for up to six hours.

He's very intelligent and busy-minded, but sometimes I'm afraid he's depressed or overworked. He's a studying pharmaceutical engineer for mental illness so I can understand a lot of thought goes into it, but I still worry.

If I ever ask how he's doing during these "episodes" he just tells me he is thinking. He doesn't seem sad going in or coming out of his trances, maybe it's just like meditating but without the sitting cross legged and humming the whole time.

I don't know, should I be worried? I've expressed how I feel to him, but he tells me I'm just a nervous guy. Posted this before.

I do this too. I often pace while thinking too.

I sometimes do this very same thing. But I'm a writer so daydreaming is a requirement. Have you asked him what me dreams about?

  • I do almost the same thing. One time, I day-dreamed and ended up biking 2 miles away from my house.I "woke up" at the Fry's Food and Drug in the chips aisle.

Extremely intelligent people do this, but if you are concerned I would recommend asking him to explain it to you. If he gets defensive it may be a sign of something rather than thinking. I do this often as well, so it is not unheard of.

Just ask him when he isn't busy thinking or staring off into space if he is depressed. Just tell him about your concerns for him. Maybe he isn't depressed but there is something in his life that bothers him. Maybe there is so much info and so much going on that it takes a while to process it all. Whatever it is, tell him you would feel better if you knew what he is thinking about. If it has to do with studying. Offer to help him.

I do this almost every day. Sometimes the entire day passes while I do this

If someone is SUPER jaded they might do this as they don't have the motivation or urge to do something else, intelligence and 'thinking' isn't a factor. No one "day dreams" like that.
