Is it normal my dad doesn't think we're poor even though we are

The only meal I eat everyday is dinner and go the entire day without food and hunger cramps bc the only things my dad buys are ingredients for dinner, so me and my sister can't eat.

He buys like maybe 2 soup cans for the entire week but that like only lasts a day. I can't even make sandwich's cause all he has is butter. I asked him today if he could buy a box of chicken nuggets for me and my sister to eat during the day (he goes shopping tomorrow, and that's it even if he forgot to get something he refuses to get it until next week shopping)

My dad made a huge deal about it and complaining, saying he can't afford the bill of us cooking the nuggets to eat and got really angry when I said we are poor and argued we are not.

I get very frustrated with him because I think we are poor or borderline poor, but he refuses to admit it. He also started complaining I'm asking too much, but I pay rent to him and stuff so I'm not freeloading off of him.

But because of this I always get takeaway food (with my own money, dad says he is too poor to buy anything, even $1 slurpee) I know it's unhealthy but he always complains about gas bills to me when i cook food that is not dinner.

So do you think we are poor?

To survive in poverty you need foods with high Calories per dollar. Eggs, rice, white bread, peanut butter, pasta, and milk will give you good nutrition at a low price. Buy them for yourself, do the math while you are shopping, and give your Dad 10 cents whenever you use the stove.

Yes. Then, do more math. Count the number of calories that you and your sister are getting to make sure it's enough. But, remember that McDonalds and other fast food is giving you far too little for way too much money.

Yes you are poor but you still should be able to eat properly. If you keep this up you will eventually get sick and die way before your time.

Have you considered having a talk with your dad about the family finances? No need to cart around a label. Just look at the the budget and see how everybody can contribute to make life quality better for all involved. So far, I see there's three people in the household. So, if all three of you do your part, I think that might be the best.

This would likely alleviate your dad a bit. It's not that hard to make enough money per person to buy food.

Your dad's got to be up front with everyone involved about the family finances. Don't remotely bother with labeling your situation. What the heck is poor? Compared to whom? However, not knowing what country you're in, if you do technically fall into an income bracket that qualifies you for any subsidy, take it!!!!! But, don't get reliant upon that subsidy as longterm assistance. You all can LIKELY altogether improve your financial situation to buy food. That's a necessity!

Don't go for chicken nuggets though. That's the equivalent of nutritional garbage! There's got to be assistance programs to offer you the ability to obtain good nutrition, yes? If not, wtf kind of dumbass place are you in? Not your fault at all! I'm just making a dirty comment about the lack of smart investment in people that through no fault of their own are stuck relying on their family circumstances that one does not choose. I believe this is known as the birth lottery. Anyways, you can eat well by sticking to basics. Seriously, beans and rice can go a long way! Not kidding! Become a pro at homecooking meals. Peanut Butter is fantastic! Great protein source that's sustaining and filling. That's just one of many options.

Quit your bitching and be thankful for what you have. Many people have far less than you. Take the remainder of your money, that you have left over after you pay rent, and buy additional groceries for the family. Stop living off your father's earnings and carry your own weight. It is evident that you are not a child anymore. So grow up and act like an adult for a change. Or else take what you have and move out on your own. Live wherever your earnings will allow you.
Where is your mother in all of this?

    • i don't live off of my fathers earnings because he doesn't have any in the first place lmao, the only money he gets is from the government for child support for my younger sister.

yes i'm very thankful for starving and getting painful stomach aches, what a lavish life i lead.

i've already tried that, i've told him multiple times i'll offer more money if it goes towards groceries but he always declines and says i should save my money. he does accept sometimes but he only lets me buy a few items which is only usually like $15 all up.

like i said in previous posts the amount of money i earn i'd never be able to afford a place to live by myself cause of this shit economy, only place i'd be able to live in and not get kicked out for not affording the bills to stay there is on the side of the fucking streets.

look up 'wwoofing'. there should be lots of communes in australia. save whatever money you have for a bus ticket or hitch on the highway. sneak out when he isn't home and go to a commune. you will get fed for work there. take your sister and go live on a hippy commune. maybe even a hare krishna ranch.

Then how do you expect your dad to provide for you with $200 a month if you can't manage to do it with your left over $300?

Where Im at there are apartments for 350 a month and you just pay electrixity bill (60$) and foodstamps for you would probably bring you about 200 $ worth of food a month also. The minimum wage here is 11$ I wonder if it really is hard to move out for you. It makes me wonder where you live

      • i live in australia, everything is overpriced and we don't have food stamps here. apartments cost more than that where i live, their almost $400 alone

Do you work part time or something? Even here in the states the lowest someone will probably earn working their 40hrs a week is 900 a month and that's in the lower minimum wage states.

$300 can go a long way towards food for a month, so long as you buy from a grocer's instead of McDonald's. It sucks but it's also obvious that you can't rely on your dad. And you should learn how to cook sooner rather than later.

I agree I tend to live off of 7$ for food a day 10$ max. I can make curry 3 meals big whopping plates, enchiladas and eggs for dinner. When you learn to cook and stop buying premade food you may save a lot of money. Of course the there are things like 8 burritos for 3.50$ at my safeway store and that shit I will buy. Even make pizza out of 2.55$ pepperoni package and 8oz block of cheese and 1 can of pillsburry dough boy butter biscuits. But the rent prices are another matter. 500$ a month sounds like part time work.

I agree, I manage to average just under $10 a day and still pull off a very low-carb, high-protein/fat diet. I recommend getting peanuts whole and unsalted (real cheap) and leaf spinach (which is $5 for 2 weeks worth).

Add eggs, tuna and chicken and you're good for protein. Then cheese and butter for fat.

      • i know how to cook it's just that my dad complains and makes a big deal about it when i do because he says i'm wasting the gas/electricity cooking and it'll cost more the more i have the stove/oven etc. on

          Electric Oven 350 1 hour 2.0 kWh $.16
          Electric Convection Oven 325 45 minutes 1.39 kWh $.11
          Gas Oven 350 1 hour .112 therm $.07
          Electric Frying Pan 420 1 hour .9 kWh $.07
          Toaster Oven 425 50 minutes .95 kWh $.08
          Electric Crockpot 200 7 hour .7 kWh $.06
Microwave Oven "High" 15 minutes .36 kWh $.03

And that's the oven friend. Imagine just running a hot plate, imagine if you have a gass stove the expenses are practically nonexistent

          • i think we have a gas oven but we rarely ever use it including me, i usually only use the stove to cook things in a pan unless something has to be cooked only in the oven.

i don't even use it everyday and a max 20 mins before i turn it off depending on what i'm cooking.

my dads always been super stingy and stuff though, he has like a problem with losing money/wasting food and i've realized that growing up. he goes to extremes in trying to save money, our fridge/cupboard is loaded with expired shit cause my dad thinks their still okay to consume. if it wasn't for me chucking it out there would prob be things in there like 10 years past their expirey date lol
