My brother got stuck in special classes and rode the short bus cause he had a heart problem and only attended half days of school. Public school is fucked in so many ways. I also had a mentally disabled kid in several of my regular classes when I was in high school, pretty sure his parents fought to keep him out of special classes. It made no sense though, while I sat there learning algebra, he was in the back of the class putting different shaped blocks through corresponding holes. Kid could not even speak a sentence but he got A's in classes I got B's and C's in.
