Anybody else notice that most homeless people are male?
I think this is strange. Why are men more likely to end up sleeping rough?
Also, do you think if the genders were flipped and the majority of the homeless were female, people would make a bigger deal out of it?

The reason. The penis. If you have a vagina someone somewhere will want you. The end.
Many homeless are veterans. There are more male veterans than female. There are more female specific shelters because they are at higher risk of abuse if found alone in the street so there are more programs. So sorry this offends the masculists of the site.
I'm practicing keeping my posts concise here.
Women are more likely to have children and/or be poverty bound due to it. Government support for that.
There are shelters specifically for women more often than not than there are for men/veterans/etc.
Women are more likely to seek counseling, therapy or help in general. Call it society expecting men to "man the fuck up" or the tendency that many males have due to society, neurology or what have you not to seek out help.
In general, society expects more from men and the one's who fail to deliver don't get nearly the leeway that women do. It looks bad on women and it hurts men.
It's also important to add that females found on the street are far more likely to be kidnapped or sexually abused and if not, impregnated into a seriously horrifying situation. Female's hygienic needs are far more dire than males.
Let's look at a scenario.
A woman is desperate and knocks on a door and asks to spend the night on someone's doorstep/barn/whatever.
A man is desperate and knocks on a door and asks to spend the night on someone's doorstep/barn/whatever.
Who is more likely to be accepted? Of course, men are more intimidating, because there's a higher chance that they would be violent criminals or something of that sort.
i'm a girl and I know if I needed a place to crash it'd be easy to find one just by asking and if I was truly desperate i would hook up with somebody.
Homeless woman end up in my basement....NO WAIT! I ment some guy's basement.
Men are much more likely to be addicted to drugs or alcohol, men are more likely to have antisocial personalities, and there are many more male veterans than female.
Why are they more likely to be addicted to drugs and have antisocial personalities? Because men have much more dangerous lives in general and usually more stressful lives...men are not coddled in our society...some boys and young men may have been coddled by their mommies...but they are the lucky ones..in general our society holds less compassion for men...and it pays the price

Remember, I am talking in generalities...not every mans life is more stressful than every womans...some women may have very stressful lives, etc etc...but in general more men are in the most dangerous jobs...military,police, lumberjacks, miners, deep sea fishers, construction, etc..etc....more men are killed by violence ( yes, men are more likely to be the perpetrators, but we will leave that to another discussion) ...men are more likely to committ suicide, die in accidents, men die earlier , have higher rates of addiction, disease, more likely to be incarcerated, arrested, be in mental hospitals, as already mentioned- be homeless, destitute, ....it starts in childhood...watch a girl fall off her bike and a boy...the girl cries and is hugged...her boo boo is kissed...a boy is told to tough it out....and this attitude is carried throughout the life cycle...even go inside a mens prison versus a women
prison...a mens prison is much more based on punishment and control...womens prisons are little soft nests compared to what men endure...trust me I seen it with
my own eyes....why do you think that 90 percent of sex changes are male to female...because those boys found out that life is better as a female ...a lady author even wrote a book about it...she dressed and acted like a man for a whole year and said she never knew how much life changed for her....no one gives two shits about men..they fend for themselves much more
I never noticed...I have seen both sexes out on the street.

My observation at first, but the Wikipedia page on homelessness includes:
'In western countries, the large majority of homeless are men (75–80%), with single males particularly overrepresented.'

Why? Because, homeless men and men period are being discriminated against. Most homeless shelters are geared towards women and children. If men have children, they can't stay with their children in homeless shelters. They have to spend the night on the street.
Like others have said ... women have options. I would much rather find a semi-decent guy that would give me food and a bed in exchange for sex than to be homeless :l
The answer is Families. Women, however troubled with emotional instability, are more likely to accept and give support to family members. These connections help keep them off the street.
Givemeafuckingnamealready called it. Men and women can work for a living but women are far more likely to find a partner that doesn't mind bringing home the money for the two than men are. I have no doubt in my mind that if men did not give women the time of day if they do not work and expected them to earn for a living that the homeless rates for women would shoot up.
As for the part on if something would be done if women made the majority of the homeless. Obviously there would. Christ, just look at how we are today. You can have men and women equally the victim of something yet only have people really giving a damn about the females in the statistic. That coupled with how there are more homeless shelters for women, I believe, than there are for men even though men make the vast majority of homeless people I think it's pretty obvious that if women were the primary victims it would be the talking point of the world.
Hell, people say women are the majority of those in poverty yet those women still have more money than the majority of the homeless which is men...
Let's also not forget about the absurd alimony laws that cripple people financially, which happens moreso to men.
Arnt homeless shelters for everyone?
Maybe not if you count domestic abuse women because I dont think they would allow a man to live with the abused women.
Another question what do you think of my suggestion about the children? Do you think that is another possibility?

my bfs best friend lives off of women... my best guess some daddy issues or something. But he lives with them and they pay for his everything! He is avrage looking after he lost his weight so not hot or anything. .. so I dont get way they do this unless its just really low self esteem. They are good looking girls too!
he even used their money to buy my bf gifts... XD
so I guess if as a guy if you can work it you can mooch off of girls too.
There are a lot of guys that can mooch off women and the women themselves will tolerate it, but her family, friends and neighbors will keep reminding her that he is a freeloader...it would probably get to the point that she will either break off contact with them or kick him out....some families would even confront the man themselves....so again society is less tolerant of men....

He is not tricking them he tells them and they are fully awar.
Example the girl he Is with now he told her he didnt love her and wanted to break up...but she wanted him to stay with her so offered to pay for his everything. Basically she is buying him.
and if she didnt want to have him anymore he would leave without a fight.
I dont think he has ever been confronted by family members.
I just wonder where he is finding all these women.
I was just talking in general..not this particular situation....some people are caretakers....they like to take care of people...and then also try to control them..caretakers usually are controllers...they just do it subtly by making it impossible for the other person to live without them...
Your bfs best friend reminds me of my cousin's husband. He plays in a band that has never made it big. He only makes a bit of money by giving drums lessons and renting out his music studio to other bands. Since they live in a small village he doesn't make much money. So he largely lives off his wife. That just goes to show that there certainly are men out there who live off women.
I would say most are, probably the vast majority. However there are shelters exclusive to women. I haven't seen any exclusive to men but if there are any I would appreciate being shown them.
What part about children? That some shelters are exclusive to mothers with children that are homeless? On that note I would ask why it isn't a shelter for people with children. I would understand if such a shelter had more females with children, for obvious reasons, however it shouldn't be closed off to men with children.
I wouldnt know if any were just for men. You could google search?

If your a single mom you can get help with bills and such.
Did you know there are places for single moms who go to college to stay...they are nice apartments with good security close to the college. you can live there for free get daycare...and stuff. Boys arnt allowed to be there after a certain time and they have a sticked no alcohol and drug rule. But they are really nice.
you can basically go to college for free and get a nice place to stay for free.
I dont think they have anything like that for single dads... sadly
I did a while ago and couldn't find one exclusive to men which is why I don't believe there is one. Some people will be able to if one for men exclusively exists though.
And that college thing...Sums it up, really.
Yeah I know about it cuz me and my bf looked into it one time. He was thinking of leaving for a job...and was going to send me to live near my mom.
One little white lie about "single" and i would have been well taken care of while he saved up as much money as he could. So he would have peace of mind about his little family.
im happy we ended up bot doing it tho... I about had a panic attack being seperated from him for so long.

I just googled "men's shelters", and found a few in several places in the US, as well as in other countries.
Because society gives females everything they need or want already. And a female can just find some man somewhere to depend on if they dont wanna work or have a disability or are a drug addict or got screwed by the goverment. A man, whether he wanted to or not, does not have that luxury.
Its quite reflective of bachelor bands of various species in the wild. It sucks! Its unproductive. I think they get pushed out of the system and cannot get back in, if they want. Women? There are far more employment opportunities for them now. Companies + Gov't, and NGO's got to fill diversity quotas. The single white male gets the least help of all. IMO, wrong! WRONG! Its like making them expendables. That's misguided cultural convention. Maybe its a natural behavior thing? Not justifying it at all here. Aiming to understand to change this, if it is a hardwired action by humans. I'm thinking of that line,"women and children first". I am female, btw. Probably, makes what I'm saying worth a bit more. I'm aiming to be neutral here. Figure out WHY this human behavior occurs, then do something about it. These men who are homeless probably lack social connections? That kind of creates life uncertainty which breeds all sorts of bad habits (oh habits that rich people suffer too, but can easily hide or rectify with instant rehab). Could be a pride thing? Independent nature? Women tend to turn to people for help. Men don't do that unless they're joining a group of like-minded men they can rely on.
This makes me think of the interesting redistribution of the gender ratio in college. More students are female these days than ever before.
I think there's even a theory (no idea if it is true, lol!) that correlates the surplus male population to a country's brewing drive to spark warmongering with other entities. If the human sex ratio creates too many males, not enough females, then you get a lot of single men with less options to find an economic foothold + a mate. Its kind of plausible (China blows this theory at the moment. But, China is getting a bit testy with sovereignty disputes over islands so, who knows what the future holds. Imagine? They would have a lot of single males to recruit for military purposes). Look at terrorist operatives in the Middle East? Lots of single guys with no where else to go are highly apt to join a terrorist group. That becomes their identity + support. Scary!!!! This crap can be stopped. These guys need places that are welcoming where they can belong. They need accessible economic opportunities that are realistically attainable. That would give them stability (stable people lose the desire for stirring conflict). They can't exactly have a mainstream social life without an adequate financial foundation in place.
That's enough pondering from me, if anyone reads all that.
Its a couple of factors that intertwine....the are pressures in our society that make it easier to get help if you are a woman...and pressures that make life more dangerous for a woman to be on the streets
