I've never used then myself but, I think, all you have to do is unwrap the tampon and insert it into your vagina. You aren't supposed to keep it in for too long, least you'll develop toxic shock syndrome.

Using a tampon does not make your period go away. Look up a tutorial on how to use it. I too was scared of using it the first time since throughout my teenage years i used pads. Also make sure you do not keep it in for an excessively long time especially on heavy days. The only time i use a tampon anymore is if i go to the pool or the beach.

You're right, it is easier to just get rid of your period. I take a Continuous dose of birth control pills and never have to deal with that shit. Its lovely. I'm also in perfect healthy by the way, for all those people who think erradicating your period is somehow detrimental to ones health.
