Is it normal i wonder why black people in the us are called african-americans?

Why are black people called African-Americans in the US? I get it that they or their ancestors came from Africa. But what are they called in Canada or Europe? African-Canadians? African-English?

I think, at least for a while, that was the politically correct term to call them
I wouldn’t be reading too much more into it than that

No matter what they are called, they will not be happy with it.

I thought they got a special different name because they had so many previous names that became inappropriate as they were considered racist. Negro was the preferred term for a while, then coloured. Obviously people had to stop using those terms because of all the negative connotations that they had developed, so they settled on African American because it described what most of them were without negative connotations.

    • Your response is racist.

It separates the black letters from the white background. You segregationist just disgust me. You should be ashamed of yourself for promoting such a communications apartheid. From now on your posts need to be gray letters on a gray background to avoid any further offense.

    African (race) American (current nationality)
    Asian (race) American (current nationality)
    European (race) American (current nationality)
You can be an African American and be white but it's better just to write down white in the race selection.

    • But no one says African-French, African-Canadian, African-Algerian. Just African-American.

I never really got that most of my cousins don't like being called African American(me neither) because there is no connection to Africa.

My cousins prefer to be called black Americans(me I identify as a Black/Hispanic American).

I can't speak for other black people born in America but most that I know besides my cousins have different opinions on the topic.

        • I think that term was used in the 1960's and 70's but somehow fell out of usage.

You must be a girl. Pornhub has only oversize dicks. The showers in men's locker rooms gives a more unbiased sample. Black guys are bigger the white/Asian guys but a bit smaller than porn stars. Hook up with a black guy if you're in the mood for a bit of a pleasant stretch.

First of all. Not all blacks came from Africa and not all Africans are black. It's just convenient for them to use that name as they are only Negros when talking about the American Negro College Association and Colored when you refer to the NAACP. It is too hard for them to refer to themselves as just plain old Americans. So I just refer to them as Blacks or people of color and let it go at that.

Interesting question. Id say maybe because America had a pretty good go around with slavery, so perhaps when that ended rather than have a term that seems so separable such as are neighbors are "blacks", people wanted to use something that was more inclusive that rang as reminder that they are americans too such as " Are neighbors are african americans" they arnt just colored folk anymore but americans who originated from Africa . You know what i mean? since colored/blacks was used to separate people, once people decided slavery was unethical, and wanted to give africans the freedom to be an american with all the rights of any other immigrant american , they decided to keep it right in the name with "african american" perhaps because they received a fair bit of hatred for some time, so to call them true americans was a big deal at the time, such a big deal that they kept it right in the name as a reminder that they are americans. Man gives me goose bumps just thinking about how great our homeland is, despite all its chaos and fuckery, despite it being cultural melting possibly causes more problems/ difficulties, its pretty amazing that we are nation of the world in a way, built on the foundation of the american dream, where people from all around the world have fled to the usa since the very beginning and they've been able to become apart of it. despite its messiness, it makes me proud to be an american
