Yes, those bloody cracked hands are vulnerable to germs and infection. Also overuse of antibacterial gels and soaps lower ones tolerance to germs via lack of exposure. This scenario isn't unlike when someone gets urinary tract infection after using antibiotics for something totally unrelated because the antibiotics kill off the good as well as bad bacteria.
This is why I always eat yogurt when I need antibiotics. Seems like a no brainer to me, I forget that people don't know this stuff. Also, if something hurts, why the hell do you continue to do it?
