My father was a doctor and a head in the 60's. Whenever a new drug came along, he had the medical skinny on it and would either give us a thumbs up or down. He saved a lot of kids' lives, including his son's I believe.
I remember his telling me that if you have a particular affinity to the opiates, if you try them even once, you are hooked for life. This means even if you never use it again, your system will always crave it. Remember, this from a surgeon who smoked grass, took peyote and LSD25, so it wasn't like him to try to scare us away from drugs in general. He even gave me some Sandoz pharmaceutical LSD.
