Is it normal i want to move to alaska from wash. dc

So, I’ve lived in Washington DC in the upper middle class for my whole life.

I’m a female, 20, and finishing my 2 years of Community College before transferring to a University. My major is GeoEngineering.

I want to attend Uni in Alaska, I’m very interested in the Geological history of said state and think the land is gorgeous.

Though, my family and friends think my aforementioned goals are ridiculous. “Why would you leave such a rich community and career hub for Alaska?”

I don’t see Alaska as being a “step down” from Washington DC, and I think with my intended major, Alaska would fair me quite well.
Am I throwing a privilege away?

Alaska is beautiful. You should take advantage of having the opportunity of being able to travel. Explore. Get some previous experience in your field, and do more traveling. Cheers babe!

      • She’s right, but the numbers are low since the population is low. Just stay out of Anchorage and you’ll be fine.

Idk anything about this field honesty but common sense says getting away from flat ground and a major city into nature is a step in the right direction for your career aspirations.
