Like with a lot of things, most types of alcohol have an acquired taste. They usually taste like crap the first time you try them.
Personally, while I think it's just okay, I've never really felt the need to try to get past the acquired taste (or the headache I get after having a glass), and have never really been much of a drinker as a result. I like to order a fruity drink every once in awhile just to see what it tastes like, and that's about it.
I do, however, love cooking with red wine. I like to put it in my spaghetti sauce. You don't want to overdo it, but just the right amount adds amazing dimension to the flavor. My sauce has been a favorite with my family and friends for years now.
