It seems to be trending right now, but I think it smells like sweaty feet and tastes like how I'd imagine that tastes. Vile.
The powdered crap they sell in the US labelled as "Parmesan Cheese" is indeed revolting, since it smells like well-aged sweaty socks and tastes like vomit.
I have no idea what it actually is, but having lived in Italy for a few years and eaten a lot of genuine Parmigiano-Reggiano - bought as a chunk and grated fresh - I know there is no resemblance whatsoever.
if by sweaty feet you mean a well rotted dried up milk smell you are correct. but not all parmesans are equal. the better tasting ones smell more agreeable. i would describe most as having the odor of womens work shoes rater than sweaty feet . I think thats why you ladies own so many shoes. air time.
It can smell gross but it tastes pretty good. I'd recommend trying it before making a judgment, cheese can be deceptive.
