Is it normal i think owning a pitbull is reckless

There are hundreds of dog breeds out there...why is it the trend to 'rescue' this breed? Whether or not you feel sorry for them its pretty reckless to take a dangerous unpredictable animal into your house especially if you have children. Why go for the one breed most likely to chew your face off? I personally would love to have the breed outlawed because the facts are they have killed more people than any other breed and when they bite they do much more damage.
Thoughts? If you have a pitbull, why?

They are very kind and sweet dogs. Pit bulls are not born aggressive. They are made aggressive by terrible people. Perhaps you should read more in to it, you seem to have informational gaps.

P.S. - anecdotal evidence is not evidence.

Its stupid. Pit Bulls get a bad rap, my neighbors had several pitbulls, and they're some of the sweetest dogs i have known.

Any dog can be mean if its abused. The problem is, some people have raised them to fight.

This whole issue is a repeat of the media outbursts in the past that said the exact same things about Dobermans, German Shepards, and Rottweilers.

Yeah. Vicious brutes. Look at them being so gentle with kids. They should all be killed.

    • No offense but I hate to see this type of thing. That's playing Russian roulette, almost every case where a pitbull mauls or kills someone the owner says "he/she was the sweetest dog UNTIL this happened" and nobody knows what caused it. Id as soon let my kids play with snakes.

I would never get a Pit Bull or even a Rottweiler. If I had children, I would never get those types of dog. Dogs can be unpredictable, regardless of breed. Why get a breed with such a disturbing reputation. They even have a jaw that can lock into place once they clamp down on their victim. That jaw is impossible to open, unless they open it themselves. There was a case where this Pit Bull somehow got out of its cage and it attacked a small child. A man attempted to save the child by getting the dog off of him. However, the dog had locked its jaw. The man had to get a gun and shoot the dog to get it off of the kid. I know that Pit Bulls and Rottweilers are on the list of dogs that men like to get to make them look tougher. Pathetic.

    • Most people who own large scary dogs either want to look like thugs , or are well- meaning idealists who want to prove they are the dog whisperer.
I don't like any large breed dogs for indoor pets they belong doing a job they were bred to do. If you want a pet get a lap dog.

Lap dogs can be scary too. My mother's got one and he is so temperamental if he eats the wrong things.

I had a Rottweiler cross. One of the gentlest dogs I've ever owned.

      • Not all of them are bad but I kind of feel it's playing Russian roulette.

Pit bulls can be very sweet. Some dogs require more training than others. What's reckless is not properly training your dog.

Yea. Kinda ridiculous to say this. It seems silly to think that as a breed these dogs are problematic. Also I'm sure that if you had small children you wouldn't get a potentially harmful rescue dog with a shady past. We had a pit mix growing up. He was the most loyal loving dog anyone could ask for. Pit bulls really aren't the problem.

    • Um have you se the news in the past decade? This breed/ breed type kills more people than any other by far.

I think the breed should be destroyed. It has absolutely no redeeming traits and they are not trustworthy enough to make good pets. Hell, they don't even make good guard dogs.

All the ones I've known (and I've known many) have been gentle as kittens. You're clearly just going with the media hype.

First face transplant was a woman who had been mauled by a Labrador.

Any dog can do it, it's mostly down to how they are raised.

          • Fair enough other dogs do bit but, pit bulls have some faulty gene which makes them more likely to snap.
Btw did the face transplant work?

No, they are bred to have fighting characteristics - strength, jaws, etc. That does NOT mean they are bred to be aggressive or vicious, it means that if they do attack, the results are more serious. Small lap dogs, in my experience, are more often the ones with a difficult temperament and shitty behaviour and likely to snap, but the incidence of serious damage is far less, so it isn't perceived as such a problem.

It is largely down to how the dog is trained and treated.

Seriously? You don't know about the face transplant? This was years and years ago...yes, this was the first successful one...that's why it was significant...

  • Nobody answered my question: why not get any other breed? I mean what made you choose a pit pull?
