Is it normal i think most fat people are to blame for their obesity?

I’m a med student and have learned that diseases and disorders that cause uncontrollable weight gain are quite uncommon. Some disorders make it harder to keep weight off, but with good diet and activity these people can stay trim. All these years I’ve heard fat people blame their fatness on medical issues, but the prevalence of fat people is many many times greater than the prevalence of the disorders they could blame. Why can’t they just admit they’re fat due to eating more calories than they burn?

People always look for a scapegoat for their problems.

You are 100% right. I'm a fatty myself, and I think it's absolutely pathetic that people don't realize it's bad thing, and try and change it. A lot of them even try and say it's beautiful and all that bullshit.

I'm interested in asking you something. Technically, aside from extreme conditions, isn't it pretty much always the fault of the person, sure they might a slower metabolism etc, but it's a physical impossibility to put on weight (store energy) without taking in calories? That's the science right? You can't create energy out of nothing?

    • Metabolism is very complicated, but yes. People with high metabolism need to eat more, low metabolism less. Both need to eat the right foods. And both almost always can maintain a normal weight - if they choose to!

    • Yep, though I kind of like chubby, hairy men.

        • Not that one, lol. At least using a few wet wipes is easier than dietary discipline and shaving, though.

Ye man. Wet wipes really give you a clean comfortable wipe.

This is true, but please remember that a lot of fat people are eating when they aren't even hungry. It's wrapped up in a lot of emotional stuff, so as a future doctor I hope that you're sensitive to that, just as you'd be sensitive to a suicidal teenager or an anorexic person. Mental health issues need care too.

  • Dr. Now on my 600 lb. life- "Calories in, calories out."

Weight loss itself is very simple. It's impossible for a body to sustain a weight, especially a high one, unless it's given the food to do so.

Even people with Prader-Willi, who actually have to eat fewer calories than healthy people, can be fit if they don't overeat.

Some people are in willful denial, because then they'd have to face the music, and put down the burger.

I have an efficient metabolism and was raised to not consider fat as attractive.
I eat the calories I burn.
I don't eat from boredom, depression, couch potato stuff, good tasting foods, excuses like
    ' it's thanksgiving'
    Or peer pressure.
    Fat is a choice.
I choose to not be fat.

    I agree.

Yes, some people are fat due to special reasons (I have a friend with this condition), but most aren't.

  • I agree a lot try and blame it on something when in reality they refuse to accept their issues and bad habits. But you can’t speak for all because you don’t always know everyones situation and although it’s not super common medical issues effect weigh problems it’s still out there and an issue. I have a high or fast whatever it’s called motabolism (idk if that’s necessarily a disease but it still effects me) and am always a constant 113 I can’t gain or lose easy what so ever but luckily I’ve always been where I’m suppost to be I’m not super skinny but I’m not chubby either. I’m happy where I’m at and always been but it takes some hard work to try and change my weight so although I don’t have some serious medical issue about me you never know someones story I’ve been stuck at this weight for about 5 years and before that 108lbs for the longest time. I can’t help being skinny. So idk if most fat people are to blame for eating that’s probably the problem, but you just never know. I kinda wish I could control mine better but on the bright side me not losing means the fat stays in the right areas. It’s easy to think it’s their own habits causing the problem so I’m going to say normal to think that. Cause I’m sure most times that’s the thing but just not always. It can sometimes be the simplest thing causing complications. Doesn’t genes come into play with this as well?

I hear you. I’ve never really been underweight as an adult, but always very trim. I need to eat a lot to maintain my weight. Several times I’ve had overweight people say things like “you’re so skinny.” Truth is I’m at right about what’s considered ideal weight for my height. But there are so many fat people in the US that I look thin by comparison. I just ignore them and actually feel sorry for them.

      • That’s true I’ve had many big people tell me I need a cheeseburger or ask me of I’m like 90lbs and don’t eat but it’s more a insult to them than it is me because ik I’m the healthier one here. It’s almost like I need to be bigger to be more accepted or fit in which is sad. I’m short my size fits me fairly well some people exaggerate like crazy. Since I can’t really control it I’m glad I’m at least where I’m suppost to be and I’m happy where I am and healthy so that’s all that matters I guess. But If I could gain a little more I wouldn’t complain if it happen.. if possible.

That's a great take on the issue. I'm super skinny and no matter how much I eat I don't change weight either. I could eat like a pig and I just don't gain any weight. Its been a huge problem for me. So I can see how the inverse would be true.

This is great insight that I have never seen before.

      • Thanks. It can be a total pain most days I eat a ton and kinda wish it could change. One thing thats really annoying is hearing “omg eat something” as if I’m starving myself.

But it’s true not everyones the same it may be more difficult on one person than the other on weight gain or loss.
