Sounds like you're what's known as "a good person", which is much better and more important that being nice. Niceness is a surface-level activity and there are a lot of nice people who are real assholes when you get down to it. They'll spend a lot of time making a big show of helping that person and then often not care about the actual helping part. Often, they'll fuck you over or leave you in the lurch, but they'll do it with a smile and so they expect you to smile back.
Good people aren't well-recognized in modern society. We're all about appearances these days, so if you make a big show of being helpful without actually helping, society will reward you much more than if you just help without making a show. The people calling you cold are judging you on a surface-level basis. They are being stupid. Ignore them. You're right; you can't help people who don't want to be helped and it's often not right to try.
IIN I think I'm not a nice person?
