Communism is an economic system and democracy is a political system, you can have both. It is possible to elect your leaders in a communist system. Some will argue that if all you have to choose from is communists what is the point? But we elect only capitalists now so it's the same thing really. There are different levels and different ideas of both capitalism and communism, so it is still possible to choose from people with different points of view.
I do not believe that communism is doomed to failure just because it is communism, but I'm also not sure that it is right for the US. Marx did believe that it works best in a wealthy society. But I think it works best in a small society. Like a community working together for the benefit of everyone where everyone does their part and is cared for. But it requires a lot of government involvement and oversight in individual lives. That is just really hard to manage in a country with over 300 million people. But if a workable system were developed, I wouldn't be opposed to it, I would interested.
You might have better luck with a move towards socialism, which is increasing in popularity with younger voters. But that doesn't always stick. After all, the hippies of the 60's and 70's grew up to be the yuppies of the 80's. Before some of you former hippies start yelling at me, I know you all didn't go yuppie lol.
I am familiar with the concept, but I don't feel I am knowledgeable enough to rate it's effectiveness in determining a value. I would say that as a layman, labor based value would seem to work for somethings but not everything. But, I actually believe that all systems of determining value are just rationalizations. Because the value of everything is simply what people think it is worth. That is true if you base value on labor or anything else.
Look at the gold standard. Many people will disagree with this, but I think basing the dollar on gold makes no difference. The reason is that a dollar is just a peice of paper whose value is based on what society believes it is worth. Gold is just a yellow chunk of rock whose value is also based on what society believes it is worth. The gold standard just fixes the value of paper to the value assigned to yellow rocks. It is all rationalization.
IIN I think America should move towards communism?

True - I sometimes use the terms (socialism, communism) interchangeably, which can be confusing to some.
What is your opinion of the labor theory of value?
