Personally a long message is overwhelming and I don't want to make a full reply to the person because I had to read a long message. Even with my close friends that happens. I use Facebook, and personally I just check it when I'm bored and that's just for like 2 mins. Honestly, if you want to get closer to your friends hang out with them, instead of talking through messages.
