Is it normal i'm incredibly irritated by my roommate's sleeping habits?

So I got a new roommate this semester (I'm in college) and didn't know them till they started sleeping above me. I never see them during the day, but at night, I'm always stressed. They always snore INCREDIBLY LOUDLY at night, which I know I can't change. But still, getting woken up at 3am by a resounding snort is something else.

And worst of all, they're the type of person to set several alarms several hours before they actually get up. They don't even get out of bed for the first one and keep hitting snooze. I already sleep at 2am every night. Every hour is precious. I've tried earplugs, noise cancelling headphones, white noise, and talked to them multiple times about this. Nothing has happened, and I can't change my room. Every time I see them now, I feel an irrational loathing because of sleep. Is this normal???

Oh yes, I completely sympathize with you! Why can't you get another roommate?

Everytime his snoring wakes you up yell at him and shake him until he wakes

My boyfriend snores very loudly and wakes me up in the middle of the night sometimes. On most nights it's not that bad and I can sleep even though he's snoring, but on really bad nights I poke him until he wakes up and fall asleep in that brief silence he's looking at me confused. Dick move I know, but no worries, he doesn't ever remember me waking him up.

I know you can't poke your roommate, I'm just empathizing. Is your roommate obese, has sleep apnea, or something? Have you two sat down and brainstorm ways to calm down his snoring? Nasal stripes?

Might be a good buy. I might try this with the boyfriend.

I feel your pain because my caravan in the backyard used to be on the other side right beside the neighbour's fence and they had four or five dogs that barked a lot so it was hard to sleep so the caravan was put on the other side away from the fence and I could still hear the dogs but it wasn't as bad. Now our current neighbour's have no dogs and silence is golden at last.

Thats super fucked up. This is why I'm making sure I'm kind of loud while my son sleeps so he doesnt develope into a light sleeper like my wife.

Anyway, get some good earplugs. There's no reason good earplugs wont work...

Get some earplugs then. They are like a dollar for good ones and have a vibrating alarm on a shoulder band. That's what I do for the 5am rush (I live next to a parking garage).

They say the wifi isnt good to have on your skin. Kind of off topic but yea... if you use your phone thats not good to have sitting on you.

That's not fair, they should go to the doctors to sort that snoring out.

      Life isn't fair, friend.

Well, that's by far the most unhelpful, facile and idiotic comment I've read today. Sleep deprivation is a serious issue and can be dangerous: OP's room mate must've known he already had this problem, so he was dishonest from the start in not telling OP.

That was supposed to be a response to DarkDemonicDesires, not to you, Weird Guy

    I recommend a katana.

  • If you have enough courage and can find a polite of asking him if he’s aware of his snoring and if he can do anything to help. Like rubbing Vic’s, bandage over nose.

Or just slap a book over his head and scream “shut the fuck up!”

I recommend the first, but lea towards not saying anything.

You can help yourself but having earplugs or headphones in as you sleep.
