Is it normal i'm annoyed with people who get offended for me?

I was hanging out with people who were White and Asian. One of them made a Hispanic joke, I laughed, yet everyone harshly scolded the person for making the joke and insisted that my feelings were hurt by it. I told them that it was okay, that I thought the joke was funny, and that I'm not sensitive about my race. They still insisted that it was offensive and I should've been offended. They said the joke disgusted them. One them was like "fine, if you won't fight for yourself, I'll fight for you." WTF?! Should I be feeling as annoyed as I am now? This isn't the first goddamn time a situation like this has happened. Now they're wondering why I won't return their calls. I'm tired of this already.

You have every right to tell them off. It's ridiculous when people do that. I'm disabled/handicapped, and get that sort of thing a lot, as well as people trying to "help" me do things. I don't mind people trying to help me, as I can typically just politely refuse the offer. The ones who get offended FOR me and try to right some perceived wrong never seem to let it go, though.

I believe what those assholes did is called projection. Social justice warriors like to do that, because they're assholes.

    • It's gotten so ridiculous. I'm not some defenseless person. It's like they want to be heros for people that don't even want their help. Then they act all morally superior. I don't get it.

      • Tell your friends, in a kind yet firm way, that their actions make you feel like you’re incapable of defending yourself. And you feel as if you’re not being treated as an adult.

      • It’s the struggle of White Millennials, lol.

We’ve been conditioned to feel guilty of the past because our ancestors may have caused harmed to a minority. To make up for our past offenses, we defend people of color when the chance arises.

Why do you people always think you're supposed to feel guilty about the past? There's enough happening in the present that your race is doing for you to be ashamed of.

but why does one have to feel guilty about what their race did anyway?

i look at people as individuals, not some tribalistic system

which to me is weird, when one bad white person does something, and then you go off saying ALL WHITE PEOPLE BAD

thats like one handicap person crashing a plane, and saying ALL HANDICAPS ARE CRAZY

            people people people...

            • I so agree.

It’s not like every white person supported slavery, descends from a wealthy family, is currently racist, or whatever they’re trying to guilt us of with.

And they fail to see they’re different groups of white people with different backgrounds.

I’m mostly of Eastrern European ancestry, and our history is one of oppression. Also, what do they think about Irish enslavement, Jewish pogroms, etc.

    • I've been telling them that. Weird thing is if it's not people getting offended for me it's the opposite: people telling me I have white privilege (I'm a light skinned Hispanic). They expect me to prove I'm Hispanic to them when I tell them and I don't speak the language, but my parents do, so I can't prove it. My family is broker than theirs.

I get annoyed when someones bothering me and then a friend says stop your hurting her. I don't like it when people think I get hurt by others.

Yeah I see your point of view. As an asian i constantly get people saying “Man you eat dogs” or “You’re Asian not Bsian.” My friends overhear this and get offended but honestly I just sit there. I don’t feel offended by it, you kinda get used to it. I’m kinda annoyed at the other non-asian people who are offended. I wish they put themselves in my shoes.

Yeah, it’s definitely okay to be annoyed with people like that. People constantly tease me about my Irish heritage and my red hair and I don’t really care when they do this but, it aggravates me when people act as if I’m offended and go off on those who tease me. Honestly, it grates my ears. So I tell them off in a firm voice and show them a pissed off face. That usually works.

However, I have a bit of a double standard for this. If someone physically threatens I don’t mind if people stand up for me, though I make sure they know I CAN handle myself, and actually with how many people who WOULD stand up for me in this case actually kind of makes me feel like a mob boss. XD

  • Thankfully, I've never been in a situation as extremely annoying as your case. It's totally normal to be annoyed by projection.

Well I think that they have a right to be offended by it and to say that they're offended, some people think that just because the joke was about a race that they're not a part of that they have no right to be offended, but that's rubbish. I do agree with you though that they shouldn't be dragging you into their opinions and acting like they're protecting you, if they're offended by the joke then that's entirely their opinion to own. That must be annoying alright.
