I think hair is an incredibly good way to express yourself. It has so many advantages. A haircut lies in the happy medium between permanency and temporariness; you can change and adapt it easily, unlike a tattoo, but a change can still last long enough to give the satisfaction of a commitment, unlike make-up. There are almost no limits to what you can do with it; there are as many styles as you can imagine and as many colours as there are in the visible spectrum. Unlike clothes, you hair is actually a part of your body so changing it is really changing *you*.
Hair is often the first thing I notice about a person's appearance. I might not remember a person's clothes once they leave the room, and I might not be able to articulate my memory of the features on their face or the shape of their body, but I will definitely remember what colour hair they had and how long it was and something about the style of it, even if it wasn't unusual or remarkable. Hair is special, I think. It's normal to be take an interest in your own and making sure it represents you in the way you want it to :)
