    • I've not heard it called the pound sign anywhere out of the US.

£ is pound sign. Y'know. For GBP.

      • You've never heard "Press pound for more options?"

Also, # is pound as in how much something weighs.
£ is pound as in British currency.

        • No, not having grown up in America, i didn't until last year. As I already said, it's different here.

I don't know which way the rest of the world does it.

Never heard of # for weight measurement, didn't think/realise it had a symbol other than lb.

I always thought "number sign" was what kids called up and "hash" was for the grown ups. Haha.

Seems to indicate it's just a US thing. Though to be fair, I didn't read about Canada but that prob falls under most commonwealth countries would likely use UK usage. And it doesn't mention like...the rest if the damn world. Hah.

      • Hah. even here I feel like it hasn’t really been called the pound sign since like the 90s.
I’m super dumb and only a few years ago realized that £ was the gb pound sign and not just another way of writing the E for the euro sign..oops

        • Aww haha.

I only know cos it kept telling me to hit the pound key when I was calling up my American phone company. I was so confused. Our automated phone shit says "the hash key".

          • I found this on Dictionary.com

"1: The pound sign. This name came to be because the symbol comes from the abbreviation for weight, lb, or libra pondo, literally “pound by weight,” in Latin."

I hate automated phone systems no matter what they are saying to me.
