this phrase came about many years ago when it was normal for people to get engaged at a Jews young age and then refrain from sexual intercourse until they would be married. Those who did not manage to 'remain pure' were said to have had pre marital sex.
The term that should have been used here is 'sex before marriage'.
The only thing about this that isn't normal is using "should of" as a 21 year old.
