Is it normal i hate when people say a handicapped child is going to be a blessing

There’s varying degrees of handicaps, yes, but don’t most suffer a much more difficult and lonelier life? That may make them kinder, but people look over them and their family’s suffering. Being kind can also be a bad thing. But I just hate how they overlook their suffering. It’s been on my mind after volunteering with the disabled back in high school.

It’s often the religious who do this, which irritates me more. Plus they guilt families into having a disabled child and offer no support other than “god only gives you what you can handle.” I just don’t think it’s a fair statement. Then again I don’t understand the Abrahamic religion idea of suffering can be blessing.

If this is your greatest hardship in life consider yourself blessed.

TypicaI human beings denial. We're so good at it. It sucks being born handicapped. I wouldn't want a handicapped child but I'd still love them. I wouldn't though lie to myself it's a blessing.

I think the whole bit about someone considering a special needs child a blessing sounds much better if the person saying those words actually has a special needs child of their own. Otherwise to just randomly say that sort of thing can come off as rather glib.

I had a what some people would consider a handicapped cat, and it truly was a blessing. When I was still in college I found an injured kitten under a bush in my apartment complex. He ended up having to have his left back leg amputated so in that way one could say he was handicapped. However, my cat did acclimate to only having three legs, and he didn't have any intellectual disabilities whatsoever. He was also really good with my pet rats, and they were all friends.

I'm pretty sure suffering is considered a blessing because as you are in a time of suffering, you understand your need for God more. It is hard to see need of a higher power if life is going great and you are making it through on your own, so the suffering shows your own lack of power and how much you need God.
I still don't think it would be a blessing to be honest.

I find your post confusing: are you saying suffering is a good thing because it causes people to turn to the god who allowed them to suffer in the first place or that some people believe that?

      • I took it as his exposition as to why many religions, especially the Abrahamic, view suffering as a blessing. It’s not his belief.

That's just very dismissive of their pain.
