Because you're being brainwashed into thinking that somehow this is a sign you're being belittled instead of just a simple courteous gesture. Maybe if you stop dividing the sexes into teams it wouldn't be such a big deal for you any longer. Most times the guy does it to get a smile or the slightest human contact from a stranger on the street-or maybe he wants to show you a little respect but doesn't know how else to display it. One way or another it certainly isn't a negative thing... unless you're just an uptight crab.
