Is it normal i don't think there's such a thing as freedom of speech anymore?

A lot of people think we live in a society where we can voice our opinions. Obviously that's not true because racists, homophobes and bigots are thrown into jail for their views. I believe this is wrong simply because is 'minorities' have the right to speak out against non existent oppression then why can't right wingers speak up to without being ridiculed for THEIR opinion.
Now I'm not right wing but rather more to the left but I still believe right wing should get their say. For example: a homosexual and a homophobe meet, I believe they're allowed to debate about who's right (without forcing the other to change their views) but be respectful as well (so if one of them wants to disengage the other wouldn't be an ass about it. I think each debating side should be respectful of the other's views bo matter what they are.
However if these opinions turn into actions that could harm another human then they'd have to desist (as they could be in breach of other laws).

Is It Normal?
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • Freedom of speech as defined by the First Amendmen of the US Constitution means only that the govt cannot arrest you for what you say. That's it. That's all. Business, private employers, the govt itself is free to fire you if you say things that they don't like. An ISP , etc. is also free to regulate content any way it sees fit as long as it does not discriminate on a basis of sex, age, disability, etc.

The right to free speech means the govt can't arrest you for what you say

It doesn't mean that anyone else has to listen to your drivel or host while you share it

The 1A doesn't shield you from criticism or consequences

If you're yelled at, boycotted, have your show cancelled, banned fromn an internet community, your 1A rights are not violated

It just that the people listening think you're an asshole.

And they're showing you the door

    • I live in the UK. Someone was imprisoned for making a joke about Nazis. Germany bans the word Nazi.
Additionally I think people should be allowed to voice any opinion but still be respectful of all.

      • Nazism is not respectful of all. Racism, sexism, and bigotry are not respectful of all.

        • That's why I think discriminating language should be used respectfully. As in if someone is currently offended then stop for the moment. Or watch where you say it in case there's a chance someone will be offended.
It's like saying Gay Pride is disrespectful of homophobics but no one cares then. It's as if left wing communities believe they're better than right wingers when, really, there's still assholes preaching that they're right.

  • It’s like all politically correct drivel. Once upon a time people got on and lived their lives and accepted their lot.

I’m not against the uprisings that took place around the industrial revolution. It was never right that 5% of the population owned 95% of the wealth. Same with the sufferagets why should women be the property of men. There are many many more periods in history where people had to fight for what is right and fair. The problem is the dogooders that want to jump on the bandwagon all the time because they are desperate for a cause.

So for years people have had banter with other nationalities, the opposite sex, the old, the young etc. If it’s not meant to be offensive it shouldn’t be a problem. Bullying and being cruel is wrong, making a joke is not, neither is expressing an opinion. But the dogooders would have you believe whatever you do or say is wrong. So they jump up and down and make enough fuss that we end up with everyone to scared to express their real opinions, in case some half wit judge that has no clue about the real world, convicts them of some pathetic jumped up charge.

    • See...I don't think it's right to continue to bully someone on their life choices (bullying a homosexual is wrong) and bullying someone because of who they are (Asian, African-American etc) is also wrong. But disrespecting somebody else because they're opinions don't line up with your own is also wrong.
(In other words somebody else can gave their opinion my way of thinking is wrong. I'll debate that I'm right but I won't cram my beliefs down their throat)

  • Freedom of Speech has always been suppressed, oppressive and ignorant people can't stand the truth....

    • Personally, I'm more left wing but that doesn't mean I think it's ok to suppress right wing views and opinions. Acts of Hate Crime are wrong but speaking out shouldn't be.

      • So you want to suppress people who disagree with right wing views?

        • What...no!
I never said that. I said those with right wing views shouldn't be as oppressed. Sure, they shouldn't be celebrated but it should be accepted that people have opinions different from the general majority.

  • Don't even try to use freedom of speech on the LoL boards against someone, the virgin moderators will come, delete something in your post/the entire thing and call you out for ''naming and shaming''. Oh and don't forget the tons of down votes you'll get there.

    • The right to speak, think and act as one wants. The state of not being imprisoned or enslaved. The state of not being subjected to or affected by something undesirable.
