Is it normal i couldn’t lift my head when waking up?

Hey guys, it’s the annoying person again here with more questions that I should be asking doctors. So I was lightly sleeping where I was dreaming but still like not deep in sleep, which I’m not sure that should be possible but we’re going with it. And I started seeing red with my eyes closed, which isn’t that unusual but I woke up. And I was lying on my left side and my head was really heavy. I couldn’t lift my head up and I was trying to and kind of scared. I wasn’t groggy or just not awake enough, I just couldn’t. And I eventually was able to lift my head a bit and my left neck muscle(?) started twitching quickly. After what felt like a long time but was probably only a minute I lifted my head and couldn’t fall back asleep so here my dumb ass is. Am I overreacting like always? Is this something that happens? Will I ever shut up? (But answer the is it normal question please thank.)

I liked the way you said this. We really need doctors on IIN, GPs and psychiatrists in particular, hehe.

Sounds like you experienced a tic. No idea why you saw red, I only see red if I close my eyes while looking at the sun. If it happened once off, don't worry about it.

    "Will I ever shut up?"

Good question, but I suspect not.

When we sleep, our brains disconnect from our voluntary muscles. Obviously, our hearts keep beating, we continue breathing, and all the routine stuff continues to happen in our internal organs, but our brains can't control our limbs. If that didn't happen, every time we dreamed we'd be flailing around and likely injuring ourselves while we were unconscious.

It sounds like there was a longer gap than normal between you becoming conscious and full control of your muscles being returned to your brain.

So, yeah, I'm sure you're overreacting.

  • Sounds similar to sleep paralysis, which I experience occasionally. It can be scary, but I find it best to calmly focus on moving.

Sounds an awful lot like sleep paralysis to me
