Is it normal i am devastated that i am not a vegan?

I hate non-vegan food. I think it's disgusting. But I have been diagnosed with a Vitamin D deficiency and I am concerned that it will be dangerous to continue being a vegan. I am very upset but I decided that the responsible thing to do for my health is to stop being a vegan. I am completely devastated, and I will be talking to a therapist about this.

I do think that veganism is great for a lot of people, but for some reason, my body is like "nope"

I don't often see non-vegans complaining about eating animal products. They usually like animal products. I would love to find a support group for non-vegans who are in a similar situation as me.

The solution is simple, be vegan and consume vitamin D supplements. Most vegans don't need supplements but for a few they are necessary.

I am not vegan myself, but I do try to eat as little meat as possible. Not so much because of ht animals, but more because of the environment and health.

I follow this vegan girl on Youtube, who is from New Zealand, and has some tips to get vitamin D. For example, she spends 15 minutes in the sun without sunscreen, and then sort of avoids it (to avoid getting burnt) and she says it should be enough.

Also, you don't need to go crazy and eat all the animals. maybe just incorporate eggs. you could maybe have some chickens and eat their eggs as well, as you might know, a hen doesnt need a rooster to have eggs, they will still produce eggs. so, if you get a chicken yourself and treat it in a nice way, (as in, not pushing it to have a crazy amount of eggs) i dont see why it would do any harm to it.

Loads of people have chickens in their backyard in Australia, my neighbour is raw vegan and their kids are veggan (with two g) but she has chicken on her backyard and she feeds her kids these eggs.

And anyway, if you have some vitamin D supplements just dont read what it says and have them? if it had some kind of animal product, it would be minimal, and it's for your own health. then you can go back to eating whatever you feel like?

I am not at all morally opposed to having my own chicken, being nice to the chicken, and eating her eggs. Still grossed out though.

I have been having Vitamin D supplements, so that I don't die. I would love to have vegan Vitamin D supplements and I will be looking for them at the grocery store. I already own vegan Vitamin D supplements with gelatin. I figure I might as well finish them since I already bought them and I seem to be able to tolerate gelatin.

You can get vitamin D by spending time in the sun. Or you can get it from fish or eggs. You don't need to even get close to dairy.

    • Well I definitely spend time in the sun and I still got a Vitamin D deficiency.

Eggs disgust me so much. Dairy disgusts me too, but not quite as much as eggs. Maybe I should force myself to eat an egg anyway.

I dont know what I think about fish. I don't like it, but maybe I should force myself to eat it.

Use the eggs as ingredients in something, then you won't even be able to taste them.

        • I am not sure if I won't be able to taste them. We'll see about that.

How many ng/ml are we talking?

Do you have any diseases or conditions that prevent you from producing/absorbing vitamin d?

    • I think I have an undiagnosed medical condition preventing me from absorbing Vitamin D properly, or maybe my body just has an issue with vegan Vitamin D. Idk.

        That wasn't what I asked...

What did the doctor say when they told you you had low vit d? What levels?

  • I talked to my mom and she told me that she thinks I should stay a vegan. I would say she seems a lil worried about me eating animal products. Before I went vegan I used to cough up blood and things like that, so I can see why she is worried. But I think I was sick from eating dairy (I have a dairy allergy). I don't think I was sick from eating meat, honey, or gelatin.

    I am actually really scared.

I'll probably use all the Vitamin D supplements I currently have, and then get vegan Vitamin D supplements.

Lots of vegan food has vitamin D, look up online about how best to get it. There's also fortified foods and vegan suppliments if it comes down to it. Most people are lacking vit D anyway so that might be a good shout.

Veganism can be completely healthy, but if you're really struggling atm then you can still enforce a vegan lifestyle in other aspects of your life, ie. not buying animal tested products, not buying leather / fur / wool etc.

    • I have a very bad vitamin D deficiency and the doctor prescribed some special Vitamin D supplements. I don't know if they are vegan but I already bought them. I am planning on taking them.

I also have a package of Vitamin D supplements that happen to have gelatin in them. Very gross. But since I already bought them, and I think I am able to tolerate gelatin, I'll probably finish this package of Vitamin D supplements.

Then I'll look into getting vegan Vitamin D supplements from the grocery store. I just hope they work. When I was a vegan, I ate foods with Vitamin D, but I still got a defienciy. idk why that is.

    • I took some Vitamin D supplements that had gelatin in them. Gross.

I also have some ~special~ Vitamin D supplements that a doctor wants me to take, because I have a very bad Vitamin D deficiency. I really don't know if they are vegan or not. But the doctor told me to take them, and I don't want to die, so I am planning on taking them.

I'm going to look for vegan Vitamin D supplements next time I go to the grocery store.

  • Interesting, interesting.

Firstly, your story could very well provide an explanation for all the other cases of failed vegetarianism and veganism that I've often heard of. Those who swear up and down that they can't maintain the lifestyle seem to be suggesting that because they failed then all other humans are doomed to the same fate as well. Very obviously this is not the case, and it could very well be that they, as individuals, suffer from some certain preexisting condition which makes the total exclusion of animal products infeasible. Regardless, it's interesting how seemingly all of these people are apparently utterly lacking in remorse or regret, as opposed to you.

But are you absolutely positive that it can't be done? Do be sure. The traditional method of obtaining vitamin D is simply from exposure to the Sun.

    • I am not "absolutely positive" that it can't be done. But if I am being honest with myself, I will -probably- get sick if I refuse to eat animal products.

As a vegan, I got a pretty darn good amount of sunlight. Still got a Vitamin D deficiency. :(

Vegans are the only cunts I ever see complaining about eating animal products. Eat what you want it's just food don't need to make a song and dance about it.
