Agreed, and people often get even stronger in their stance when they are approached in a rude or disrespectful way about it. Definitely not a good way to convince someone to change.
That's a subconscious survival tatic. If you lasted up to a certain marker of time clearly what you believed worked out for your continued survival so it just sticks. Going off the beaten path could get you killed when the old way worked out thus far.
To change it you have to internally surmise that it's a benefit in the long term (including afterlife for religion) so you should change your behaviour or beliefs.
