Is it normal i’m annoyed when people tell me not to use “big” words?

I don’t claim to have the world’s greatest vocabulary, but I find it easier to express myself sometimes using “smarty-pants” or “SAT” words. This seems to upset or anger people that don’t understand the meaning of the words I’m using. I don’t think I should have to “dumb down” to make it so more people understand me. Freakin’ educate yourself, or Google it!

Perhaps you should consider making some new friends that are more on par with your level of vocabulary.

I love big words and over dramatic flowery langauge.
Can I understand what they’re saying? No
Is it still fun to listen to? Absolutely

Yeah, sometimes a big word just comes to mind and is the perfect description for what you're trying to say. It actually takes more effort to find a simpler synonym for it.

I used to use big words on purpose when I was arguing with my ex husband because I knew he had no idea what they meant. Bwahahahhahah!

I amused the hell out of myself when I was realllyyyy mad at him. He had knowledge of certain stuff, like mechanics and landscaping, but when it came down to vocabulary or spelling, he was dumber than a box of rocks. 🤣🤣🤣

My first ex-husband was originally from Greenville, Mississippi and I enjoyed correcting his grammar a little too much.

Say you want to communicate with someone who you know doesn't speak English. Would you get pissed off at them for not understanding you when you speak to them in English?

If you're trying to explain something to a three year-old child, do you use the same vocabulary and grammatical constructions as you do when speaking to an adult?

If you want to communicate something to another person, the onus is on you to express yourself in a way that they can understand.

Good communicators know how to use simple words to express complex concepts, and intelligent people alter their use of language to fit the context. People who use obscure, multi-syllable words are often attempting to demonstrate their superior intelligence, and the need to do that in an ordinary social setting is juvenile. Others use uncommon words in an attempt to obscure their true meaning, and that's dishonest.

You don't say who exactly gets annoyed at you for not sticking to the 2,000 words of the basic English vocabulary. If these people are all your friends, then I'd suggest that you seek to widen your social sphere. There's a strong correlation between vocabulary and general intelligence, so if there's a definite mismatch between your vocabulary and that of your friends, you're probably hanging with people who aren't as bright as you. Spending time with people who don't understand what you're trying to say probably means that they also don't grasp some of the concepts that form the basis of your view of the world. Being with people like that now and then can be fun if you're able to just enjoy their other personal qualities, but it's unlikely to lean to much intellectual growth.

My mom like to make fun of me for using the word “monetize” in relation to Youtube and money making. Its really annoying cause the tone is always “look at her using bug fancy words”

I mean don't sound dumb on purpose but don't be one of those dweebs that goes around using big words just for the sake of acting like you're smarter than everyone else. People who are tryhards like that are usually really lame and annoying to talk to. Like if you're purposely using words to fish for people asking for the definitions everybody's going to think you're a dick.

I find it irritating whenever I have a discussion about something technical, usually engines, vehicles, history of engineering, etc and someone who has no interest in the subject demands the conversation be "dumbed down", even if they don't care about said conversation.

  • I deal with this too, and I find it especially infuriating when people are confused by words with easily identifiable etymology
