A lot of people are suffering from this. In my town there's even a support group for it. It has nothing to do with having done something bad; dude is suffering because the world is going to shit and there's not a lot he can do to prevent that, but he feels like it's his moral obligation to do everything that IS in his control to prevent it, which adds up to a lot of petty things like going vegan and not buying paper towels.
The common term for it is "climate grief", and while it's not particularly psychologically healthy, it's becoming more and more common.
