Is it normal for slow, stupid people to use self-checkout lanes
If they don't know how to press the right numbers or find the bar code on their groceries, shouldn't they let the professionals handle it?

I use to do the same thing. People who are impatient are so easy to bother. I love it. I use to act like I didn't know the codes to the vegetables or fruit and I'd take forever looking through the flip sheet. Or I would make a call over the intercom. I actually thoroughly enjoyed that job solely because of those type of customers.
I almost always now refuse to use them because an over zealous employee of certain supermarket chain accused me of trying to avoid scanning items, when it was actually their stupid effing scanner system that wasn't working properly.
Sometimes a supermarket employee will try and get me to use the self checkouts but I usually reply, "No thanks I'm not an employee".
I believe OP is probably buying things like pads and other sort of things they dont want other people seeing. Also there is a good possibility of stealing on self check out. I honestly dont believe self check out is a good idea, especially when its at a store with NO PEOPLE DOING CHECK OUT.
So if its the one where you simply put in the number of your item and get a reset I could see someone checking out their things, taking the reset, and running out the door like "Yay free grocery's". I mean I would never do such a thing, but I could see the possibility of someone trying it.
I once could of gotten away with not paying for a pizza, but I paid for it anyways. Since the person did not realize I had not paid yet and just gave it to me. Would have been simple to just walk out the door with it. No one would have noticed the small error till later. Like the "Fresh and Easy". If you are in one of those stores you are a shopper, as there is no human workers in that shop, just machines..
I am probably a guy you want handling your home security system. Since I will point out every possible way someone can break into your home and how to prevent it.
You are slow and stupid for using them yourself.
Get a checkout assistant to work it for you whilst giving them a gentle lecture about technology taking their job to maximise shareholders' immoral profits..
Don't even put the money in yourself. Refuse to touch the thing and get the assistant to put the money in and hand you the change.
They generally have one supervisor for about six of the checkouts.
