Is it normal for people to make faces of disgust when i speak?

I find that I'm socially awkward. I try to tell a joke but it usually flops. This makes for awkward conversation when I get uncomfortable when I'm the centre of attention in a coversation. I'm not shy, but I don't know how to make small talk because either I don't have anything to say, or there is nothing happening worth talking about. I'm afraid of saying something weird/irrelevant!

The thing is, why do so many people make faces of disgust when I talk? I don't talk about perverted things. Sometimes it's just something lame that came to mind. Why don't they just tell me straight to my face what's wrong with me so that I can improve myself? Then they won't have to suffer sitting through conversations with me!

Is It Normal?

  • It seems to me you just aren't cool, and sound like a bit of a know it all. Maybe try hanging out people who you can relate to better? I know if some weirdo awkward ass kid came up and starting talking about curry and articokes.... id roll my eyes too... shit man , is this what white folks talk about?

  • Or it could be some lame comment like, "artichokes are called that way because people choke on them when they eat it". Why are some people able to pull these puns/jokes off while I can't?

  • Hahaha thanks for the feedback! Some of your comments had me rolling over in laughter ;)

Nope, I do not have bad breath or rotten teeth! I've never had a tooth decay in my life! But I would like the people I'm talking to know that I'm definitely not shy. Maybe it's just a personality clash thing.

But why do they seem to have nothing to say in reply to whatever my soliloquy's content was?

Well, an eg of my reply to a conversation about stew would be, "There are many types of stew! Even curry is a stew!". *Cues the eye-rolling*

It's just exactly what someone else could say, yet others would get an enthusiastic reply from someone else, but all I get is an uncomfortable silence. What's going on?

  • maybe you over thinking your awkwardness is just making you even more awkward, i agree with ColdDesert, dont worry about impressing them! just be wierd...its the wierd people who are remembered :)

  • I get odd looks like that too! I start to talk sometimes and I'll just see their eyes glaze over. Do I talk too awkward? Talk too much or get too wordy?? Don't go right to the point or trail off mid-sentence??
I notice that certain people will be able to say something quite racy and inappropriate and will get approving laughs and lustful stares from people, but if I even touch on a similar front people will seem shocked and disturbed. Sadly, I could see being ugly affecting peoples opinions of my words, but my my looks and physique are quite typical and healthy.

  • I am also very awquard. People clearly do not get my sense of humour or my personality, but by the sounds of things you are embaressed by your oddness? Don't be! Embrace it, if people don't like what your saying, who cares!? Be you because it would be a whole lot more boring if everyone was the same.

  • its rude if people make faces at you unless you are either spit when you talk or are saying something disgusting. Maybe you have Aspergers and cant read people. But it still seems pretty rude to make faces at you.

  • With the example you gave it sounds like me. I find myself topping others stories. I didn't think I was, I thought I was just adding to the conversation. I don't give my thoughts on what they are saying unless they ask. I dont talk about me anymore. When they have a bit of news to tell me, I pretend I didn't know. It's such an awful
game. Sometimes I feel like I dumb down. I guess I need to find new friends. Or go back to somewhat the old me and if they don't like me anymore they can leave. So, I hear what you are saying.

    • I know I already commented on your post, but I was bored and revisiting old comments when I happened back on yours and saw that you posted more. Its the weirdest thing though..your comments--I feel like I wrote them. Like, that would have been exactly how others would have reacted to me and even how I would have typed it out here.

  • Give us an example of the sort of things you say to make people look disgusted...
