I lived with an Italian girl for awhile who would have the tv on all day and night. I noticed that half the time she wasn't even watching it, she was just doing odd chores around the house. I asked her one day why she always had the tv on even when she wasn't watching it and she said "its for the background, it keeps me company throughout the day"
I don't know if that answers your question but that was the reason for her and it used to drive me crazy as well.
Holzman_67, yes, that's usually what people do, I think. They keep it on for background noise. I loathe!!!! I mean, try music???? Anything is better than blabber and commercials from a tv. It makes awful background ambiance.
