Is it normal for millennials to just chose to not pay their rent?

We have tenants who have been late paying rent or only paying a portion of their rent, 6 times in the last 13 months. When I ask/remind them the rent is due, I am told, yeah, I was going to pay you, but I had some other things come up. (like what I ask) There was a sale at the aquarium on some exotic fish I wanted. Or, we decided to go away for the weekend.

As a hard working person, I think the priority is to put a roof over my head, so I pay my bills before any "extras". So would you say that it is normal that my tenants just chose to not pay their rent?

You've lost control and respect as a landlord. Better let someone else handle it.

yep, they are definitely taking advantage. Happens every time I try to be kind and understanding.

Nothing to do with when they were born, they're just getting away with whatever you let them get away with.

Boot them out. Judge Judy would say it's your fault for letting them get away with it.

  • Millennials are a bunch of whiny, entitled losers so yes, very normal.

  • I don’t think this just a millennials problem, but you’re also to blame if there’s no repercussion for late or no payments.

    Get firm bro!

I dont think it's a millennial problem. I remember growing up in the 90s and early 2000s, my aunts and uncles would have tenants that would use every trick in the book to live in the home for free. By the time they were finally booted out, the home was damaged and since the tenants were broke, pursuing a lawsuit would've wasted more money, so they had to cut their losses and fix things.

Next time they are late on their rent you should just evict them. Let someone who will actually pay their rent on time be a tenant.

Unfortunately doesn't work that way around here. I have been following the letter of the law though, filing an L4 for collection of non payment. But then they pay, even if it's 25 days late, and then I have no grounds to evict them. I have decided to not renew their lease, so it will be easier to evict them. But they will need to be more than 2 weeks late paying 2 more times before I can request an eviction notice. But then that process could take 6 months. And they might not pay during the process. I really just want to sell and leave at this point. Too stressful.
