I think girls are generally quite loathing of those who are percieved as "better than them". They like to feel good about themselves and see other women as competition, especially if they are better looking with a personality to match.
It's a dog-eat-dog world and this kind of one-up-manship is very common wherever you go.
You keep doing you and ignore the haters. You can't please everybody.
