Is it normal for cashiers to be rude when you return items?

Are they trained to be cold and not nice when you return something, or do they really give a shit? Or are they on a little cashier power trip? Especially at a store where homeless regularly stuff their bags full of stolen items, without consequence?

Back when I worked in a fancy department store we were told to be polite at all times regardless of what the customer was doing. I was paid the same no matter how much the store made so I didn’t give a hoot if people returned items, I actually kept a personal “records book” of biggest returns (the best being £2000 worth of coats). It sounds like these people are either on a power trip or just miserable.

Yeah it just depends. Lol I still have an old equipment manual from that car wash I used to work at actually, it's really not a big deal.

Some people who have never worked in retail seem to have misguided ideas of how invested people are in those jobs. I remember my mother telling me off in stores for saying the stock was poor quality or ugly because, “The staff can hear you!” Unless it’s an independent shop and that worker just happens to be the owner they aren’t going to care that people are insulting the merchandise.

They literally just don't get it. They're on their own "side", the person trying to return items is on the other "side". Anxiety issues look quite creepy indeed to any human being. As do outright lies and acting look to any human being. Please do note that I distinctly left out the word "other"...because we're all the same human race that's still surviving largely in part due to outdated instincts, which are still being improved. Realistic optimism is the key, pessimism is still somewhat helpful but only as an occasional aid.

As a side note, literally anything can seem creepy to anyone. Some people have phobias of things like pickles. Seriously.

Where I live the cashiers are always so nice. They just wanna talk forever. They see a baby and they tell ya about their baby for 20 minutes.
