  • Social media is pretty toxic. People tend to like to create some kind of idealized fantasy version of themselves on there for others to see vs. trying to actually be a decent human.

It's amazing how the ability to put selected things about yourself in a public forum turns into a narcisistic circle-jerk. Everyone thinks they're a celebrity.

    • Yeah, that's the thing. It's super annoying seeing his pathetic little circle ooh and ahh over how great he is when he's a total dick who doesn't deserve any of that praise. His mom's friends were all going on and on about how she raised such a great "man". 🤮

I also know a girl who bullied me relentlessly in school despite me doing my best to be nice to her and she's now working with mentally handicapped kids (which is disturbing) and constantly virtue signals about what a caring person she is and how she loves everyone too. I very much doubt it's because she grew up and changed because her entire family was always the exact same way and even her mother joined in on the bullying (and she's yet another virtue signaler who likes to pretend she's the most caring person ever - I guess the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree).

      • I use facebook for the messenger sometimes to talk to people I know that like moved away.

I found one of my ex's friends on there that's like that. Never seemed like a bad person in person, don't know her to well, but lately Ive had more nothing to do than usual and I keep looking her stuff up. Just because she tends to regularly put up these long boring self-satisfying rants about how she's basically better than everyone else on the planet. How responsible she is because she works 90 hours a week while piling up massive credit card debt buying dumb shit on amazon, how much more important she is because she's a nurse in a hospital and everyone else is an asshole. It's not a good look.

I think the reason people get so addicted to that stuff is the ability to create a persona for yourself to show off to people you don't see regularly, and a lack of awareness as to what you're actually making yourself look like.

        • I think so too. Plus it's a way to seek validation and kind of live in a fantasy world you get to create for yourself too.
