Is it normal for americans to equate relationships/love with sex?

It seems that for Americans a relationship is incomplete, failed or not meant to be if there isn't sex involved in the dating phase. "Getting laid" is somehow a goal that everyone there must achieve, preferably while still in high school/college. The very first thing that an onscreen couple does when they get together is have sex.

Yes the western culture is very sex obsessed and your failing life if your not getting laid or your relationship has no sex.

    • That casual sex is seen as being perfectly OK and normal pretty much says it all.

Yes. On screen stuff is exactly like real life.

    • Hence why the question was asked. Read: "seems"

Have you forgotten that media reflects and shapes culture?

Do you not understand that only imbeciles say "hence why"?

Have you forgotten that movies show an exaggerated version of reality?

        • And what do you think that exaggeration is based on? What is the reality? My statement stands.

    I'm confused.

"It seems that for Americans a relationship is incomplete, failed or not meant to be if there isn't sex involved in the dating phase."

    Followed by

"Getting laid" is somehow a goal that everyone there must achieve, preferably while still in high school/college."

Just 'getting laid' doesn't mean you're dating or in a relationship, it usually means you AREN'T looking for more than casual sex.

Oh shit, I forgot that was frowned upon here.

    • Thanks for answering the question. Two sides of the same coin. The focus is still on sex.

That's quite the generalization you have there.

    • But is the generalisation true? Why are the things I mentioned so prevalent in American culture?

To me - no, not really true. It could just be your area.

In my area, there are people who view relationships quite differently because of cultural impact. I also don't hang out with people with that type of thinking so I guess there's that.

I don't base real life on tv/movies but that's just me.
