Of course; it has been a hidden blood line for many decades as her ancestor was a minor part of the royal family that was visiting friends when the royal family was executed, and went into deep hiding. The kind of secret passed down from a dying grandmother to a granddaughter on her deathbed.
Had it been known that my wife family had royal blood during the period of communism and the period of the Soviet Union; thy could have been killed by anyone - and whoever killed them would have been declared a hero. After-all - the royals only stole from the poor and were the reasons the country fell.
So she technically was not recognized by Ukraine in modern times (even after the breakup of the Soviet Union); and technically as not formally recognized she did not have to list that on the US Citizenship application - but felt it was needed for completeness. However, that does not change who she is.
Also, I have a similar story. My ancestors associated with my last name were loosing the war with a neighboring kingdom (Prussia region - currently Germany) during the years when most small kingdoms were combined into larger ones in that area. One of the sons fled to the US. Otherwise, all members of the royal family were slaughtered (including children) to eliminate any claims on the territories and properties by any descendants later.
My Grandfather went back to Germany I believe in the early 1980's and located the crumbling family castle; and when the locals found out he was a direct decedent offered to allow him to buy it for 1 German Mark if he would fix it up. He declined. You could likely drop $1 Million + is such a renovation, not to mention routine upkeep, utilities, and taxes.
A reality, there are a lot of people who have descended from royalty somewhere.
But, I sure enjoy calling my wife Princess, and she sure enjoys being called it.
