He could have been just one of those very opinionated people... I would say not to let it bother you because it was 5 years ago - but I've had that same thing happen... Once only, thank goodness but it's still a blow to one's self-esteem!
I do brush frequently also, but had had my braces removed shortly before the remark so my teeth were stained from the leftover glue. And still are in some parts =[
What's important is that your teeth were fine back then and are even better now! No remarks should some flying your way, if they do then there's no reason for them, okay?
